Patchway Athletic Youth U12s versus St Vallier U12s (Played at Scott Park on 26/10/03) Patchway played hosts to St Vallier U12s in the 2nd round of the Avon Youth League U12s Cup. The home side were severely depleted with several players unavailable suffering with the flu virus. Final score 0-0 after extra time, Patchway won 5-4 on penalties to progress to the 3rd round. From the start of the first half it was clear this match was to be a defensive battle between two well matched teams. Patchway survived the early onslaught from St Vallier and created chances of their own without carrying the menace that their strikers normally possess. Both teams pressed hard for the opening goal but neither team was able to muster a clear cut goal scoring opportunity, largely due to resolute defending from both teams. Half time score 0-0. The home side started the second half by continuing to play on the counter attack with their rock solid back four looking unlikely to concede. Both sides created half chances but it was becoming inevitable that this game was heading for extra time. It was no surprise when the referee blew for full time with the score at 0-0 taking this match into extra time and the dreaded golden goal. The two ten minute periods of extra time offered both teams genuine opportunities for outright victory, but neither team could convert their chances forcing the tie into penalties. The penalty shootout was to prove a penalty master class with Patchway converting all five of their allotted spot kicks only to see St Vallier miss their final penalty allowing the hosts to progress with a 5-4 advantage. Patchway penalty takers were: T Smith, A Saunders, R Lansdown, J Wells, B Speariett. In summary the hosts defended as if their lives depended on it. Every player put in a heroic performance allowing Patchway to progress in this competition. The Patchway players were ecstatic in victory but sympathised with their opponents who showed great sportsmanship in defeat. Man of the match - Patchway Athletic Youth U12s. All 12 players magnificent.
Hanham Boys U12s versus Patchway Athletic Youth U12s (Played at Hanham High School on 28/09/03) Patchway travelled to Hanham Boys in the first round of the League Cup. The visitors were at full strength with a full squad to select from. Patchway ran out 12-0 winners to progress into the second round. Skipper Jon Noyes lost the toss forcing Patchway to play up the hill and into the sun in the first half. In the early exchanges the visitors struggled to take a grip on the game and became frustrated until Ashley Scantlebury settled their nerves scoring from close range. Patchway quickly found their passing game and added goals through Ben Speariett (2), Ryan Lansdown and Nico Clifford. The half time score was 5-0. The second half saw Patchway make use of the rolling substitution rule that has been introduced by the Avon Youth League for this season. This allowed all players the chance to force their way into the starting line up for next Sundays top of the table clash against St Aldhelms. Despite the many substitutions resulting in an unfamiliar looking Patchway line up, the visitors ran riot using the downhill advantage seemingly able to score at every opportunity. Further goals were added by Tallen Smith (2), Ashley Scantlebury, Chris Buck, Ben Speariett, Nico Clifford and Aiden Saunders notching his first for the club. In summary Hanham Boys were put to the sword in this game being ruthlessly dispatched by a rampant Patchway. Man of the match Daniel Mathews Rock solid display in defence.
Mangotsfield Utd U12s versus Patchway Athletic Youth U12s (Played at Whitehall Road on 23/11/03) Patchway travelled to Mangotsfield United in the third round of the Avon Youth League U12 Cup. The match was played in difficult conditions on a boggy pitch that did not allow any real passing football. Patchway were beaten 4-0 by an impressive Mangotsfield Utd team. Patchway were forced on the defensive from the start of the first half finding it difficult to get out of their own half due mainly to the threat from the home side. Despite their dominance Mangotsfield did not look like scoring as Patchway defended superbly with their goalkeeper, defence and midfield magnificent. Patchway's main problem was their inability to keep possession of the ball in attack due largely to the well disciplined Mangotsfield defence. The half time score 0-0. The second half saw Patchway concede the crucial first goal when Daniel Mathews conceded a penalty that was well converted by Mangotsfield giving them a 1-0 lead. Patchway fell further behind following a goal scored from a well taken free kick to make it 2-0. Nico Clifford then conceded a penalty that was converted to put the home side out of sight at 3-0. To their credit Patchway continued to fight for a consolation goal that their play had merited but it was Mangotsfield who completed the scoring making the final score 4-0. In summary Patchway were beaten by an impressive Mangotsfield side. Considering this was a division one team playing a division four team the Patchway players did not look out of their depth. The club can look back on an enjoyable cup run with much to look forward to in the league campaign ahead. Man of the match Connan Wyatt-Goodwin Impressive display for his club.
